Russian Aerial Attacks Kill Civilians in Kharkiv and Sumy Regions as Long-Range Strikes Escalate
KYIV — May 20, 2026 — Russian aerial attacks across Ukraine have killed at least six civilians and wounded dozens more over the past 48 hours, as long-range strikes between the two nations continued to intensify following a brief and largely ineffectual three-day ceasefire earlier this month.
In the northeastern Sumy region, a Russian drone attack on the Hlukhiv community on Tuesday morning, May 19, killed two civilians and wounded two others, the Sumy regional prosecutor’s office reported. The attack, carried out with what investigators believe were two drones, damaged administrative buildings and apartment buildings in the community .

The Kharkiv region suffered two separate deadly attacks. On Tuesday, May 19, a Russian airstrike killed two people and injured 12 others, according to the regional military administration . Among the injured was a six-year-old girl. The Russian forces used four guided aerial bombs and 55 drones of various types, including Geran-2, Molniya, and FPV drones, damaging 30 private homes and a post office in the city of Kharkiv .
Overnight strikes on Monday, May 18, into Tuesday, May 19, also resulted in two deaths and 17 injuries in the city of Priluki in the Chernihiv region .
The Chernihiv region has faced sustained assault, with regional military administration head Viacheslav Chaus reporting 43 strikes on the region over the past day. A Geran drone strike on an enterprise in Mena set a dairy workshop on fire, wounding two people . The city of Chernihiv itself was hit by a drone attack that struck an enterprise and also set a residential building ablaze .
Heavy Civilian Toll in May
The recent attacks are part of a broader escalation that has exacted a heavy toll on civilians. According to data cited by the United Nations, at least 238 civilians were killed and 1,404 injured in Ukraine last month — the highest monthly civilian casualty figure recorded since July 2025 .
A particularly deadly strike hit a nine-story apartment block in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district on May 14, killing 24 people, including three girls aged 12, 15, and 17. At least 48 others, including two children, were injured in that attack .
Russian forces launched more than 3,170 attack drones, 1,300 guided aerial bombs, and 74 missiles against Ukrainian cities in the week ending May 17, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attacks resulted in 52 deaths and 346 injuries, including 22 children .
On May 13-14 alone, Russia reportedly launched 1,567 long-range drones and 56 missiles, killing at least 39 people, including three girls, and injuring more than 175 others .

UN Warns of Escalation
Briefing the UN Security Council, UN official Kayoko Gotō said Russia had launched one of the largest aerial bombardments of Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022 .
UN officials warned the war is becoming “deadlier by the day,” with targeted attacks on humanitarian workers and a widening funding gap for aid operations . Officials said clearly marked UN vehicles had been struck by drones in Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk regions last week, despite humanitarian missions being notified to the parties in advance.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, the UN Human Rights Office has verified at least 15,855 civilians killed in Ukraine, including 791 children, and 44,809 injured, including 2,752 children. The actual figures are likely significantly higher, the UN said .
Ukraine’s Retaliatory Strikes
Ukraine has responded with its own large-scale drone operations. On May 17, Kyiv launched one of its largest drone strikes on Russian territory since the war began, sending nearly 600 drones into Russia. The attack killed at least four people, including three in the Moscow region, and wounded a dozen others .
Zelenskyy defended Ukraine’s actions, stating they were “entirely justified” retaliation for continuing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
“Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified. This time, Ukrainian long-range sanctions reached the Moscow region, and we are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war,” Zelenskyy said on social media .
Failed Ceasefire
The recent escalations followed a brief US-brokered ceasefire from May 9-11 that President Donald Trump said he had asked Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to observe, but which had little impact. There is no sign a peace deal is taking shape despite US diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s invasion .
Civilians across Ukraine continue to face daily threats from aerial attacks, with emergency services working to clear debris and assist the wounded. The UN has urged respect for international humanitarian law, safe evacuations, humanitarian access, and urgent funding .
