Israeli Naval Forces Intercept Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla, Detain Hundreds of Activists

JERUSALEM — May 19, 2026 — Israeli naval forces have intercepted a flotilla of aid vessels attempting to breach the naval blockade of Gaza, detaining hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists in a major military operation that has drawn sharp international condemnation.

The Israeli military began boarding the boats on Monday morning, May 18, as the flotilla sailed in international waters approximately 250 nautical miles (463 kilometers) from Gaza’s coast . A live video feed from one of the boats showed commandos boarding the vessel as activists sat on deck with their hands raised before the stream abruptly ended .

The Operation: ‘Continue Until the End’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally monitored the operation from military headquarters in Tel Aviv, releasing video footage of himself speaking with a naval commando commander and instructing him to “continue until the end” . Netanyahu described the intercepted vessels as part of a “malicious plan to break the isolation we have imposed on Hamas militants in Gaza” .

Hours before the interception, Israel’s Foreign Ministry called on activists to “change course and turn back immediately,” denouncing the flotilla as “a provocation” .

Detentions and Scale of the Flotilla

According to a member of the Freedom Flotilla team cited by WAFA, Israeli forces arrested approximately 345 activists from 39 ships, while nine other vessels continued their journey toward Gaza . The Global Sumud Flotilla organizers reported that 10 boats had been intercepted and contact lost with 23 of the 54 vessels involved .

The flotilla, which departed from Marmaris on Turkey’s southern coast on May 14, comprised more than 50 vessels carrying approximately 500 activists from 45 countries . Organizers described it as the “final leg” of their journey to Gaza’s shores, aiming to draw international attention to the dire conditions in the enclave following more than two years of war .

Israeli Justification

Israel has maintained a naval blockade on Gaza since 2007, which it says is necessary to prevent weapons smuggling to Hamas. The military declined to comment on the ongoing operation, but officials have repeatedly stated that Israel will not allow any breach of what it calls the “lawful naval blockade” .

According to Gaza health authorities, at least 72,763 people have been killed and 172,664 injured by Israeli fire since October 2023 .

International Condemnation

Ten nations have issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s actions, describing the interception as a violation of international law and a threat to humanitarian efforts.

The foreign ministers of Pakistan, Turkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Jordan, Libya, Maldives, and Spain signed the statement, which strongly condemned “renewed Israeli assaults against the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful civilian humanitarian initiative aimed at drawing international attention to the catastrophic humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people” .

The ministers called for the immediate release of all detained activists, as well as “full respect for their rights and dignity” .

Turkiye’s foreign ministry issued a separate statement, calling the interception a “new act of piracy” .

Indonesian Journalists Among Those Detained

Among those detained were four Indonesian journalists: Bambang Noroyono (Republika), Thoudy Badai (Republika), Andre Prasetyo (TV Tempo), and Rahendro Herubowo (iNews), along with five other Indonesian activists .

In a pre-recorded message, journalist Bambang Noroyono said: “I ask the Indonesian government to release me from the hands of the Zionist Israeli occupation forces,” while urging Jakarta to continue its support for Palestinian independence .

Pakistan also confirmed that nationals from several countries, including Saad Edhi—son of philanthropist Faisal Edhi and grandson of late humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi—were taken into custody .

Previous Interceptions

This interception marks the third attempt by the Global Sumud Flotilla to reach Gaza. In an earlier operation on April 30, Israeli forces intercepted approximately 20 boats near the southern Greek island of Crete, initially holding about 175 activists . Two activists were detained for several days, with reports of mistreatment that Israel has denied .

Israel transported two activists from that earlier mission—Saif Abukeshek (a Spanish-Swedish citizen of Palestinian origin) and Thiago Ávila (a Brazilian citizen)—back to Israel, where they were interrogated and detained before being deported .

Gaza’s Humanitarian Situation

The flotilla interception comes as Gaza continues to face severe shortages of food, medicine, and essential supplies. According to WAFA, despite a ceasefire declared in October 2025, Israel has continued to limit humanitarian aid access while conducting daily strikes that have reportedly killed 877 Palestinians and wounded 2,602 others .

The flotilla organizers have said their mission is peaceful and non-violent, aimed at highlighting what they describe as the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza .

As of Tuesday, May 19, it remains unclear when detained activists will be released or what legal proceedings, if any, they may face. The Israeli military has not provided detailed information on the conditions of those detained or the exact number of activists in custody.
