Train Collision in Indonesia’s Bekasi Kills at Least 15, Dozens Injured
JAKARTA — April 28, 2026 — At least 15 people were killed and 88 others injured when a long-distance train collided with a stationary commuter train at Bekasi Timur Station in West Java on Monday night, April 27, in one of Indonesia’s deadliest rail accidents in recent years.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m. local time when the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train, traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya, crashed into the rear of a stationary KRL Commuter Line train on the same track near Jakarta’s eastern outskirts . The commuter train had been stopped at the station following an earlier incident involving a taxi at an ungated railway crossing .

Women’s Carriage Bears Brunt of Impact
All 15 of the deceased were women, officials confirmed. The most severely damaged carriage was the women-only car at the rear of the commuter train—a common accommodation on Indonesian trains designed to prevent harassment .
President Director of state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), Bobby Rasyidin, confirmed that all fatalities and injuries were among passengers of the commuter train. All 240 passengers aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train survived the incident .
“Evacuation took quite a long time, around 8 hours, and we carried it out very carefully,” Rasyidin said .
Survivor Accounts
Sausan Sarifah, a 29-year-old passenger who survived the crash, told reporters from her hospital bed where she is being treated for a broken arm and a deep thigh wound: “I thought I was going to die” .
Search and rescue operations continued through the night, with emergency teams working carefully to extract survivors from the mangled carriages. Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), said specialized personnel were required for the delicate extrication process .
“Some victims were alive but still pinned by wreckage. We needed to involve personnel with certain skills to perform a measured extrication,” Syafii said .
Chain of Events Under Investigation
Authorities said the accident may have been triggered by a chain of events. A Commuter Line train reportedly struck a stalled taxi at an ungated railway crossing near Bekasi Timur Station, prompting a second commuter train to stop on the tracks .

People flocking to the incident site then blocked the railway, causing further delays. The Argo Bromo Anggrek, heading toward Bekasi Timur Station, apparently received a signal error and was unable to avoid colliding with the stationary commuter train .
Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee has launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the accident .
Presidential Response and Government Commitment
President Prabowo Subianto visited the accident site and a hospital in Bekasi on Tuesday morning, April 28, to meet with survivors and express condolences to the families of the deceased .
The president announced a significant government commitment to improving railway safety nationwide, allocating up to 4 trillion rupiah (approximately US$232 million) to repair problematic railway crossings.
“I have ordered that we immediately repair all these crossings, whether by installing guard posts or building flyovers,” Prabowo said at the crash site .
Identification and Victim Support
As of Tuesday morning, authorities confirmed that the remains of all victims had been recovered . The deceased were taken to a police hospital for identification . An additional 84 injured passengers were receiving treatment at three nearby hospitals, according to KAI officials .
A crisis center has been established to prioritize victim assistance, according to Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations for the Metro Jaya Police .
Service Disruptions
The collision disrupted rail services along the Blue Line, which connects Jakarta to Cikarang town in Bekasi Regency. One of the two railway tracks was reopened for train operations by Tuesday morning, although Commuter Line services remain limited to Bekasi Station . Long-distance train services to and from Jakarta have been temporarily suspended .
Investigation Continues
Police and transportation authorities continue to investigate the accident, with the National Transportation Safety Committee examining signal systems, driver communications, and the sequence of events leading to the collision.
“As for the chronology of events, we are leaving it to the National Transportation Safety Committee to investigate the cause of tonight’s train accident in greater detail,” Rasyidin said .
This marks the deadliest train collision in Indonesia since 2015, when a commuter train struck another train near Jakarta, killing more than 50 people .
