Monsoon Landslides in Rohingya Camps Leave at Least 13 Dead, Dozens Injured

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh — July 8, 2026 — At least 13 Rohingya refugees, including several children, have been killed and dozens more injured in a series of monsoon-triggered landslides across the sprawling refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, authorities and humanitarian organizations have confirmed, as relentless rainfall continues to batter the region .

The deadliest single incident occurred on Wednesday, July 7, when a hillside collapsed onto a girls’ madrassa and Islamic study centre inside Camp 5 at Ukhiya, burying students and a teacher under mud and debris . Rescue workers pulled 13 people from the site; while earlier reports cited eight deaths, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) later revised the confirmed death toll to five students . Several other children were injured and taken to hospital for treatment .

A Week of Tragic Weather

The Wednesday landslide was the second fatal incident this week. Over the weekend, at least eight refugees, including five children, were killed when hillsides collapsed onto their shelters while they were asleep . The death toll from a series of landslides across the district since Monday now stands at 21, with 16 of the deceased being Rohingya refugees .

More than 250 millimetres of rain fell within a 24-hour period, causing widespread flooding and structural damage across the camps . More than 1,000 refugees have been relocated from areas deemed high-risk, but authorities report that many remain reluctant to leave their makeshift shelters despite repeated warnings .

A Population on the Edge

The Cox’s Bazar camps are home to more than one million Rohingya refugees, most of whom fled a military crackdown in Myanmar in 2017 . Many live in fragile shacks made of bamboo and tarpaulin, clinging to steep, bare hillsides — terrain that becomes dangerously unstable in monsoon conditions .

Humanitarian organizations warned that the monsoon season is far from over. Save the Children reported that several learning centers have been damaged and forced to close, while homes, clean water sources, and sanitation facilities have also been destroyed . Plan International cautioned that children, especially girls, are among the most at risk, facing increased threats to their safety and access to essential services .

Quote: “The deaths of these students are a devastating reminder of the dangers children in the Rohingya camps face when extreme weather strikes,” said Golam Mostofa, Head of the Cox’s Bazar Area Office at Save the Children .

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall, with authorities remaining on high alert for further flooding and landslides . The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that 36 refugees died in similar landslides between 2021 and 2026 .
