Seven Dead as Qatar Military Helicopter Crashes into Sea Due to Technical Malfunction

DOHA — March 22, 2026 — A Qatar Armed Forces helicopter crashed into the country’s territorial waters early Sunday due to a technical malfunction, killing all seven people on board, including Qatari military personnel and Turkish nationals, authorities confirmed .
The Ministry of Defense initially reported the crash of a military helicopter during a routine flight, stating that a technical fault caused the aircraft to go down in Qatar’s regional waters . The Ministry of Interior deployed specialized search and rescue teams, including the Maritime Search and Rescue Team of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security and the Qatar International Search and Rescue Group of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), to locate those on board .

All Seven Victims Recovered
Search and rescue operations concluded Sunday with the recovery of all seven individuals who were aboard the helicopter. The Ministry of Interior confirmed that six victims were initially found, with the seventh and final missing person later recovered .
The Ministry of Defense extended its deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs, praying that God grant them mercy .
Victims Identified
Qatar’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the identities of those killed in the crash. The Qatari nationals who lost their lives were identified as:
- Captain (Pilot) Mubarak Salem Daway Al Marri
- Sergeant Fahd Hadi Ghanem Al Khayarin
- Corporal Mohammed Maher Mohammed
- Captain (Pilot) Saeed Nasser Samekh (later confirmed among the deceased)
The helicopter was operating under the Qatar-Turkiye Combined Joint Force Command, and the crash also claimed the lives of three Turkish nationals:
- Major (Air Defense) Sinan Tastekin, a member of the Qatar-Turkiye Joint Forces
- Suleiman Cemra Kahraman, a civilian collaborator of Turkish nationality
- Ismail Anas Can, a civilian collaborator of Turkish nationality
Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry confirmed that the Turkish victims included one Turkish Armed Forces member and two technicians from Aselsan, the Turkish state-owned defense company . Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan both expressed condolences to the families and to the brotherly people of Qatar .
Technical Malfunction Cited as Cause
According to initial findings from Qatari authorities, the helicopter crashed due to a “technical malfunction” during a routine flight . The exact cause of the crash will be determined following a full investigation by Qatari authorities .
The helicopter was conducting training activities as part of ongoing military cooperation and coordination between Qatar and Türkiye under existing agreements and plans .
