Australia Appoints First Female Army Chief in 125-Year History

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, an information warfare and cyber expert, will take command in July as part of a broader defence leadership reshuffle

CANBERRA — April 14, 2026 — The Australian government has appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the first female chief of army in the nation’s 125-year military history, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday, April 13, marking a historic milestone for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) .

Coyle, 55, who currently serves as Chief of Joint Capabilities, will assume the role in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart following his retirement. She will be the first woman to lead any service branch of the Australian military .

“From July, we will have the first ever female chief of army in the Australian Army’s 125-year history,” Albanese said in a statement .

Defence Minister Richard Marles called Coyle’s appointment a “deeply historic moment” that carries profound significance for women currently serving in the ADF and those considering a military career .

“As Susan said to me, you cannot be what you cannot see,” Marles told reporters .

A Career Spanning Four Decades

Coyle enlisted as a soldier in the Army Reserves in 1987. She completed a science degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy and graduated from the Royal Military College in 1992 into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals .

Her extensive career includes deployments to Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan and the Middle East. Her senior command roles have included Head of Information Warfare, Commander of Forces Command, Commander of Joint Task Force 633, Commander of the 6th Brigade, Commander of Task Group Afghanistan, and Commanding Officer of the 17th Signal Regiment .

Since July 2024, she has served as Chief of Joint Capabilities, leading the ADF’s Space and Cyber Domains and National Support for Defence .

Coyle holds three postgraduate master’s degrees, is a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Army War College, and an alumnus of the Harvard Advanced Management Program. Her military honours include Member of the Order of Australia, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Conspicuous Service Cross, and the U.S. Army Commendation Medal .

Expertise in Modern Warfare

Defence experts have noted that Coyle’s appointment reflects the growing importance of modern, technology-driven warfare. Her background in information warfare, cyber and space domains aligns with the Australian Army’s ongoing transformation toward long-range firepower, drones, and advanced combat tools .

“This breadth of experience provides a strong foundation for the responsibilities of command and the trust placed in me,” Coyle said .

Broader Leadership Reshuffle

The army chief appointment was part of a wider shake-up of Australia’s top defence leadership. Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current Chief of Navy, has been named as the new Chief of the Defence Force, succeeding Admiral David Johnston. Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley will be promoted to serve as the new Chief of Navy .

Hammond, a submariner who played a key role in the 2021 AUKUS pact between the US, UK and Australia, confirmed that Australia has the naval capability to respond to any US request for help in the Strait of Hormuz, though no request had been made .

Gender Representation and Challenges

Women currently make up approximately 21 percent of the Australian Defence Force and 18.5 percent of senior leadership roles. The ADF has set a target of 25 percent overall female participation by 2030 .

Coyle’s appointment comes as the ADF seeks to address allegations of systemic sexual harassment and discrimination within its ranks. Last October, a class action lawsuit was filed against the ADF alleging it failed to protect thousands of female officers from systematic sexual assault, harassment and discrimination .

Marles said Coyle’s achievement would be “deeply significant” for women serving in the ADF today and those considering a military career in the future .

Strategic Context

The leadership changes come as the Australian government prepares to unveil its two-yearly national defence strategy update later this week. Australia has been seeking to refocus on threats to the country’s northern border, including through the sell-off of ageing defence assets announced earlier this year, and in response to calls from US President Donald Trump for allies to dramatically ramp up defence spending .

Prime Minister Albanese departed on Tuesday for a fuel diplomacy trip to Brunei and Malaysia, following a similar visit to Singapore last week, as global energy markets remain volatile amid the ongoing Middle East conflict .
