Apple Announces AI-Powered Siri Overhaul, Unveils Dedicated Assistant App at WWDC 2026
CUPERTINO, California — June 7, 2026 — Apple officially unveiled a comprehensive AI-powered overhaul of its digital assistant at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday, June 7, introducing “Siri AI” as a more conversational, context-aware assistant capable of performing complex tasks across the company‘s ecosystem of devices .
The announcement, made at Apple Park in Cupertino, marks a significant shift for the 15-year-old digital assistant, which has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors such as OpenAI‘s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic‘s Claude . The new Siri AI will be available in beta later this year on supported devices .

From Voice Assistant to Conversational AI Chatbot
The updated Siri represents a fundamental transformation from a voice-controlled assistant into a full-fledged conversational AI chatbot. Users will be able to interact with Siri through both voice commands and typed requests, enabling back-and-forth conversations for tasks such as brainstorming, event planning, and document review .
Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi introduced the new assistant with an unusual public critique of competitors pursuing “AI for the sake of AI without considering the people it’s supposed to be able to serve.” He added: “We believe that truly helpful AI must be centered around you and your needs” .
Dedicated Siri App and Redesigned Interface
For the first time, Siri will exist as a standalone app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, acting as the main destination for all interactions with the assistant. The app will sync across devices, allowing users to revisit previous conversations and pick up where they left off .
On iPhones, Siri will be accessible by swiping down on the Dynamic Island, replacing the previous full-screen edge glow animation with a more subtle dark-themed interface. On Macs, Siri is integrated into Spotlight search, and a monochrome menu bar icon provides additional access .
Key Capabilities of Siri AI
On-Screen Awareness and Personal Context
Siri can now analyze content displayed on a user‘s screen and incorporate personal information from across Apple devices to answer questions more intelligently. During demonstrations, Apple executives showed Siri identifying a location in an Instagram post and providing directions, as well as referencing contacts without requiring users to repeat details in each prompt .
Write with Siri
A new “Write with Siri” feature allows users to draft emails and messages with AI assistance. The system learns how users typically communicate with specific contacts—for example, drafting quick, direct bulletins for a manager versus more conversational messages for friends .
Visual Intelligence in Camera
The Camera app gains a dedicated Siri mode that can answer questions and take actions based on what users point their camera at. Examples include splitting a restaurant bill by pointing at a receipt, adding multiple calendar events from a poster, and translating menus. This feature extends to screenshots, allowing users to ask questions about content captured on their displays .

System-Wide Dictation and Proofreading
Apple has improved system-wide dictation accuracy for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. A new automatic proofreading feature checks text across apps for typos and grammatical errors .
Shortcuts via Natural Language
The Shortcuts app now allows users to create automated tasks using natural language. Users can simply type what they want to accomplish—such as“send my ETA to my partner when I leave work”—and Apple Intelligence generates the shortcut automatically .
Powered by Google Gemini Partnership
In January 2026, Apple announced a multi-year agreement with Google to integrate Google‘s Gemini AI models into Siri, marking a significant departure from the company’s traditional reliance on in-house development . Under the arrangement, Gemini handles complex queries and generative tasks that Siri cannot perform on its own, while simpler requests continue to be processed on-device or through Apple‘s Private Cloud Compute system .
The partnership extends to other AI features across Apple‘s ecosystem. Apple maintains that user privacy protections remain central to Siri’s operation, with data used only to process requests and not accessible to third parties .
Child Safety Features
Alongside the Siri announcement, Apple introduced expanded child safety tools. Parents will have new controls, including requirements for children under 13 to request permission to buy apps, browse new websites, and talk to new contacts. A Screen Time Schedule feature allows parents to choose which apps children can access at different times of day .
Availability and Device Requirements
Siri AI will launch in beta later this year, initially available in English only. The European Union will not receive the feature at launch due to regulatory hurdles; Apple stated that“EU regulators did not accept any of Apple‘s proposed solutions” to bring Siri AI to the region while safely supporting other virtual assistants .
The new assistant requires newer Apple devices, including iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air, and select iPad and Mac models with Apple‘s latest chips .
Apple‘s AI Catch-Up Effort
Apple has faced growing pressure to demonstrate progress in artificial intelligence after competitors introduced powerful AI assistants capable of producing long-form text, images, and code . The company previously promised a smarter Siri at WWDC 2024, but the overhaul faced delays .
“Apple had to address its shortcomings in AI, and WWDC provided some answers,” said Ben Wood, chief analyst at FDM CCS Insight. “The company must now prove that its privacy-led, integration-first approach can translate into a meaningfully better everyday experience, not just parity with rivals” .
Tim Cook‘s Final WWDC
The conference was notable as Tim Cook‘s last as CEO before he steps down in September after 15 years at the helm. Cook will be replaced by John Ternus, who has been a major presence at WWDC but did not speak during the main keynote address on Monday morning .
The final versions of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and macOS 27 are expected to be released in September 2026, with Siri AI available as a beta feature on compatible devices .
