Heavy Rains Across Pakistan Kill at Least 52, Displace Hundreds as Roof and Wall Collapses Mount

Children account for nearly half of fatalities as PDMA warns of more downpours; Balochistan and Sindh also hit by flooding and record rainfall

PESHAWAR — April 6, 2026 — At least 52 people have been killed and over 100 others injured in rain-related incidents across Pakistan since March 25, as heavy downpours triggered widespread roof and wall collapses, primarily in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), officials said on Monday, April 6.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported that 45 people have died in the province alone since March 25, with children accounting for nearly half of the fatalities — 23 of the deceased being minors . According to the PDMA report, the casualties were caused by the collapse of roofs and walls of houses during heavy rainfall across multiple districts. The deceased include 23 children, 17 men and five women .

Widespread Damage Across KP

The scale of destruction across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been extensive, with a total of 442 houses reported damaged so far. Of these, 60 houses have been completely destroyed, while 382 sustained partial damage .

The impact of the rains has spread across a wide range of districts in the province, including Bannu, Abbottabad, Kohat, Peshawar, Nowshera, Bajaur, Lakki Marwat, Kurram, Hangu, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Upper Dir, Battagram, North Waziristan, Tank, Mardan, Mohmand, Khyber, Dera Ismail Khan, Lower Kohistan, Mansehra, Torghar, Swat, Charsadda, Lower Dir, Orakzai, and South Waziristan .

In Swabi district, a farmer and his sister died after the roof of their house caved in on Sunday, April 5. Rescue 1122 officials said the incident occurred in the remote Saalo Banda area of Yar Hussain town, where a mud house had been weakened by heavy rainfall. A 12-year-old boy died at the scene, while his 35-year-old sister later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital. Three other family members were injured .

In Dera Ismail Khan district, a six-year-old girl was killed when the roof of a house collapsed, officials said. The incident came as recent rains affected several villages in the district, including Hathala, Madi, Mir Bazi and Takwara, where rainwater entered homes and streets, submerging a number of localities .

Two additional deaths were reported in Lower Dir on Sunday. A 69-year-old man was killed when a wall collapsed in the Camp area, while a 56-year-old man died after a room in his house collapsed in Takoro village due to heavy rains .

Balochistan and Sindh Also Hit Hard

The death toll outside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also risen. In southwestern Balochistan province, at least nine people have died since March 20 due to rain-related incidents, according to provincial disaster management officials . Fatalities were reported in Harnai, Kohlu, Turbat, Jaffarabad, Loralai, and Kachhi districts . In Bala Nari, a breached embankment destroyed around 100 houses and killed 50 livestock, while approximately 400 acres of agricultural land were inundated .

In southern Sindh province, Karachi recorded its highest-ever April rainfall in a single day this week, with 38.7 millimeters of precipitation measured on Thursday, April 2, surpassing the previous record of 37 millimeters set on April 2, 1985 . The coastal city has reported at least 21 deaths in recent weeks due to wall, roof and tree collapses caused by strong winds and rain .

Ongoing Rescue Operations and Government Response

PDMA, Rescue 1122, and district administrations are continuing relief operations in affected areas, with emergency assistance being dispatched to impacted communities. Authorities have directed local administrations to accelerate relief and rehabilitation efforts and ensure timely support to affected families .

A PDMA spokesperson confirmed that the Emergency Operations Center is fully functional. Citizens can report any emergencies or seek weather updates and information by calling the toll-free helpline at 1700 .

Weather Forecast and Warnings

Authorities have warned of another spell of heavy rain expected from April 6 to April 9, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to sensitive tourist areas . The National Disaster Management Authority has also warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds in parts of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the next 12 to 24 hours, while snowfall is expected in mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir .

Residents have been advised to follow official safety guidelines to minimize risks amid continuing unstable weather conditions. Authorities have also warned of possible urban flooding in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar and surrounding districts, as well as landslides in northern areas that could disrupt travel .

Vulnerability to Climate Change

Pakistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and has in recent years experienced increasingly erratic weather patterns, including extreme rainfall, floods and heatwaves that have exposed gaps in infrastructure and disaster preparedness .

The country is still recovering from catastrophic floods in 2022 that killed more than 1,700 people and affected over 33 million, while last year’s monsoon season also triggered widespread flooding, killing more than 900 people .

With fresh rains forecast and infrastructure already weakened by weeks of downpours, officials fear the situation may worsen, calling for heightened vigilance and rapid response to prevent further loss of life and property .
