4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northwestern Nepal, No Damage Reported

Tremor felt across Darchula, Baitadi and Bajhang districts in Sudurpaschim province; no casualties

KATHMANDU — March 26, 2026 — A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal’s Sudurpaschim province on Thursday morning, March 26, authorities said, with tremors felt across several districts in the northwestern region of the Himalayan nation. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage .

The earthquake occurred at 8:32 a.m. local time (0247 GMT) with its epicenter near the Murai area of Darchula district, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre . The tremor was also felt in the neighboring Baitadi and Bajhang districts .

No Casualties or Damage Reported

Authorities confirmed there were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake . Nepal, which experiences multiple earthquakes annually, lies in one of the most active tectonic zones (Seismic zones IV and V), making it highly vulnerable to seismic activity . The Himalayan nation ranks 11th among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries .

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported earlier this week that a total of 7,231 disaster incidents have occurred across Nepal in the past 11 months, resulting in 479 deaths and 1,800 injuries affecting 13,098 families . Among these incidents, seven earthquakes were recorded during that period .

Recent Seismic Activity in the Region

Thursday’s tremor follows a series of seismic events across the country this month. On March 23, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Madhesh province, approximately 77 kilometers northwest of Khadbari in Koshi province . The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, and tremors were felt in areas including Namche Bazaar, Lukla, and Lobuche, with weak shaking reported as far as Kathmandu, approximately 120 kilometers from the epicenter .

Earlier on March 18, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in far-western Nepal, while a 4.4 magnitude tremor struck 27 kilometers northeast of Birganj in Madhesh province on March 12 .

A Nation Accustomed to Earthquakes

Nepal’s position on the collision boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The convergence of these plates at a rate of approximately 4-5 centimeters per year continues to build stress that is periodically released through earthquakes.

The country remains acutely aware of earthquake risks, particularly following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 25, 2015, which killed approximately 9,000 people, injured over 22,000, and displaced 2.8 million . That disaster destroyed more than 500,000 houses and damaged 269,000 others, also causing extensive damage to UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and the Boudhanath Stupa .

Since then, authorities have strengthened building codes, improved emergency response mechanisms, and increased public awareness about earthquake safety measures .

Ongoing Monitoring and Preparedness

Emergency services and disaster response teams remain on alert following Thursday’s tremor. Officials have urged residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines in the event of aftershocks .
