The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed responsibility for the operation, stating that units of Ukraine’s Defense Forces carried out strikes on military and logistical infrastructure facilities on Russian territory during the night of March 14 . According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the Afipsky oil refinery in the settlement of Afipsky, Krasnodar Krai, sustained a direct hit followed by a fire on the plant’s territory . The facility has an annual processing capacity of 6.25 million tonnes, accounting for approximately 2.1 percent of Russia’s total oil refining capacity .
Russian regional authorities confirmed the attack, stating on Telegram that a fire broke out at the refinery due to falling drone debris . “According to preliminary information, there are no casualties. The fire involved technical installations. Emergency and special services are working at the scene. Firefighting efforts are underway,” the ministry added .
The Afipsky refinery, which produces gasoline, diesel fuel, gas condensate distillates, heavy oil residues and sulfur, is one of the largest oil refineries in southern Russia and has been owned since 2019 by Oil Technologies, a structure affiliated with Safmar . Local media reports indicated that the AT-22/4 technical installation, the starting point of the oil refining process, caught fire during the attack .
Port Kavkaz Infrastructure Damaged, Three Injured
In a separate strike, Ukrainian forces targeted infrastructure at the Kavkaz port in the Chushka area, Krasnodar Krai . The port, which primarily handles grain and liquefied gas shipments, is located across the Kerch Strait from Russia-annexed Crimea .
The operational headquarters of Russia’s Krasnodar region confirmed on Telegram that three people were injured in the strike on Port Kavkaz . A technical vessel was damaged, and a fire broke out at the berthing complex . Port facilities sustained damage, according to Ukrainian military officials, who stated that the scale of destruction was still being clarified .
Both the Afipsky refinery and Port Kavkaz are involved in supplying the Russian army, according to Ukraine’s General Staff, justifying their targeting as legitimate military objectives .
Russian Air Defense Claims
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 87 Ukrainian drones during the overnight attack . According to the ministry’s statement, 31 drones were shot down over the waters of the Sea of Azov, 16 over the Krasnodar region, eight over occupied Crimea, and the remainder over several other Russian regions including Bryansk, Belgorod, Rostov, and others .
In response to the attacks, the cities of Krasnodar and Gelendzhik temporarily restricted the reception and release of aircraft .

Saturday’s strikes follow a pattern of sustained Ukrainian long-range drone operations targeting Russian energy infrastructure. The Afipsky refinery had been previously attacked in January 2026 and November 2025 .

Ukrainian officials have framed these strikes as part of a deliberate strategy to degrade Russia’s military-industrial complex and disrupt the financial flows funding the war. Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s state-run Centre for Countering Disinformation, stated that Ukrainian forces have in the past month alone attacked several chemical plants in Russia producing explosives .
“Ukraine is gradually destroying Russia’s military-industrial complex and its cycles,” Kovalenko said on the Telegram messaging app .
