Ukraine Launches Over 280 Drones at Russia in One of Largest Barrages of the War
Moscow region targeted as two injured in Saratov; Ukrainian and US negotiators set for talks Saturday amid stalled peace efforts
MOSCOW — March 21, 2026 — Ukraine launched more than 280 drones at targets across Russia overnight, one of Kyiv’s largest aerial barrages since the start of the full-scale war, according to Russia’s defense ministry, as Moscow reported interceptions near the capital and injuries in the southern Saratov region .
The massive overnight operation, which unfolded into the early hours of Saturday, saw waves of drones targeting locations ranging from the Moscow metropolitan area to industrial and military facilities deep inside Russian territory. Russian air defense systems intercepted 27 drones heading toward the capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a series of posts on Telegram .

In the southern Rostov region, approximately 90 drones were shot down, Governor Yuri Slyusar reported. The region has frequently been a target of Ukrainian strikes due to its proximity to the front lines and its role in supporting Russian military logistics .
Casualties and Damage in Saratov
Two people were wounded in drone attacks that damaged several houses in the southwestern Saratov region, Governor Roman Busargin posted on Telegram . Residents also reported fires near the Saratov oil refinery, a facility that has been targeted in previous Ukrainian strikes .
The Saratov oil refinery, located nearly 600 kilometers (370 miles) east of the front line, is owned by Russian state oil giant Rosneft and has a processing capacity of approximately 140,000 barrels of crude per day, producing gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products that supply Russian military operations .
Separately, drone strikes and explosions were reported in the city of Tolyatti in Samara Oblast, where residents reported targeting of the KuibyshevAzot factory, a major Russian chemical plant specializing in nitrogen fertilizers .
Strategic Military Targets
The overnight barrage came as Ukrainian forces continued their campaign of deep strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure. On March 18, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) conducted strikes against a secret Russian unmanned systems center known as Rubikon in the occupied Donetsk region, as well as a coordination center for enemy drone units and ammunition warehouses, according to the SOF command .
“SOF units carry out Middle Strike operations against enemy targets in occupied Ukrainian territory,” the command said in a statement, noting that underground resistance movement operatives contributed to the success of the strikes .
Earlier this month, on March 7-8, Ukrainian drones struck the Armavir oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar region, targeting a linear production and dispatch station described as a “key hub” in the oil logistics system. The strike sparked a large-scale fire covering approximately 700 square meters that required 120 firefighters and 38 pieces of equipment to extinguish .
Russian Air Defense Challenges
A senior Russian lawmaker acknowledged that Moscow cannot build a continuous air-defense shield against Ukrainian deep strikes, arguing that the country’s vast scale leaves the military too thinly spread to cover everything . Commanders are instead prioritizing major cities, regional centers, and critical sites such as power plants, defense factories, and key bridges, rather than attempting blanket protection across the country .
The difficulty of defending such a vast territory was underscored by the fact that drones reached Moscow—a city hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border—despite layered air defense systems protecting the capital. Debris from intercepted drones fell in multiple locations around the city, though no casualties were immediately reported .
Russian Strikes on Ukraine Continue
Even as Russian air defenses worked to repel the Ukrainian barrage, Moscow’s forces continued their own aerial campaign against Ukrainian territory. On Saturday, most of Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region was left without power after a Russian drone attack, Governor Viacheslav Chaus said. The regional capital, also called Chernihiv, was fully without power, the city administration said .

Russia has conducted a vast bombardment campaign against Ukrainian energy facilities throughout the war, causing regular, hours-long blackouts across the country . Ukraine’s air defenses have been actively engaged in countering these attacks; on March 18-19, Ukrainian forces shot down or suppressed 109 of 133 drones launched by Russia, according to the Ukrainian Air Force .
Diplomatic Context: Talks Set for Saturday
The massive drone barrage came as Ukrainian and US negotiators are set to meet in the United States on Saturday, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a bid to revive stalled negotiations aimed at ending the four-year war .
Zelensky said Friday that Kyiv’s negotiators will seek clarity from US officials on the next round of three-way talks with Russia, which were postponed due to the war in the Middle East that began in late February . The diplomatic push comes amid ongoing concerns that global attention has shifted away from the Ukraine conflict following the outbreak of a major Middle East war.
Analysis: A Pattern of Escalating Deep Strikes
Ukraine’s drone campaign against Russian territory has steadily intensified in recent months, with Kyiv increasingly targeting critical infrastructure far from the front lines. The overnight barrage of more than 280 drones represents a significant escalation in scale, even as individual strikes have previously reached targets as distant as the Tatarstan region, hundreds of kilometers east of Moscow.
For Russia, the challenge of defending such a vast territory from drone attacks has become increasingly acute. The admission by a senior Russian lawmaker that a continuous air defense shield is impossible underscores the strategic dilemma Moscow faces: while Russian forces have made incremental gains along the front lines in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian long-range strikes continue to reach deep into the Russian heartland, exacting a cumulative toll on military and energy infrastructure.
As Ukrainian and US negotiators prepare to meet on Saturday, the intensity of the drone campaign on both sides of the border—with Russia continuing its own aerial attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities—suggests that neither side is willing to ease military pressure ahead of potential diplomatic engagement.
