Russian Daytime Strikes Kill 14 in Ukraine as Easter Hopes Dashed
Moscow launches massive barrage of over 500 drones and missiles across multiple regions, damaging residential buildings and a veterinary clinic
KYIV — April 4, 2026 — Russian forces launched a massive daytime aerial assault across Ukraine on Friday, April 3, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens more in what officials described as a deliberate escalation ahead of Catholic Easter weekend, shattering hopes for a temporary holiday truce.
The Russian military employed more than 500 drones and dozens of missiles in the broad daylight salvo, primarily targeting the capital region of Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian air force . The barrage prompted emergency power outages in several regions as emergency services scrambled to respond to strikes across the country .

Widespread Casualties Across Multiple Regions
The attack killed one person and left eight wounded in the Kyiv region, according to regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk . In a particularly distressing development, a veterinary clinic in the region was damaged during the assault, resulting in the deaths of approximately 20 animals. Distraught pet owners and staff worked to save surviving cats and dogs on the lawn outside the damaged facility .
In the Kyiv region’s satellite towns, a drone struck a residential building in Obukhiv, and another attack occurred between a kindergarten and a school in Vyshneve, damaging nearby homes, according to Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko .

Three people were killed in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, while attacks on the northwestern Zhytomyr region and central Dnipropetrovsk region killed two others, authorities said . Further east, Russian strikes on the frontline regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia killed eight people, local officials confirmed .
In the city of Sumy specifically, a drone strike hit a high-rise residential building, causing a fire on its upper floors and injuring at least three people, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration .
‘Easter Escalation’ as Truce Hopes Dashed
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of purposefully intensifying attacks ahead of Catholic Easter Sunday, “turning what should have been silence in the skies into an Easter escalation” .
Zelenskyy had signaled Kyiv’s readiness for a truce over the Easter holidays earlier this week, but the Kremlin said it had not received any “clearly formulated” proposals . Moscow has consistently denied targeting civilians, though the pattern of daytime strikes on residential areas has drawn widespread condemnation.
“This is how Moscow responds to Ukraine’s Easter ceasefire proposals — with brutal attacks,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga .
Shift in Russian Tactics
Military analysts and Ukrainian officials noted a significant shift in Russian aerial tactics, moving away from predominantly nighttime barrages to increasingly frequent daytime attacks. Ukrainian officials claim this change is intended to “increase civilian casualties” by striking during working hours when more people are in public spaces .
“This is a combined attack carried out on a working day, using a large number of drones and missiles,” said Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation within Ukraine’s defense ministry .
Peace Talks Stalled by Middle East Conflict
The latest attacks come as trilateral peace negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States remain stalled, largely because Washington’s attention has been diverted by its aerial campaign against Iran that began in late February .
Zelenskyy said he has invited an American delegation to Kyiv to relaunch negotiations with Moscow. “The American group can come to us and, after us, go to Moscow. If it does not work out with three parties, let’s do it this way,” he told reporters .
Amid the Middle East war, Ukraine has sought to leverage its expertise in countering Iranian-designed drones, which Russia has been using extensively in its attacks. Last week, Zelenskyy visited several Middle Eastern countries and signed defense agreements with Qatar and Saudi Arabia .
Civilian Impact
The daytime nature of the attack caused widespread disruption and fear across the capital. Some residents of Kyiv sheltered in metro stations or basements, while others sat in cafes seemingly unfazed by the attacks despite blaring air raid sirens .
Residents of affected areas described scenes of chaos and destruction. “I found out about it through Telegram channels. Then all my friends and acquaintances started calling me, telling me that our building was attacked. I have no words. The main thing is that everyone is alive and healthy,” Lesia Podoriako, an Obukhiv resident whose building was struck, told The Associated Press .
The Russian military has not issued an official response to the civilian casualty figures. As of Saturday, April 4, emergency crews continued recovery operations in affected areas, and Ukraine’s energy operator worked to restore power to regions impacted by the strikes .
